You do not need to install Make Reading Fun!™. The program runs off each individual CD, saving space on your hard drive. You never have to worry about installing or uninstalling the software. Back to General Questions Index 2) Must I have the CD in the drive to use the software? Yes. Make Reading Fun!™ does not install onto your hard drive, so you must have each CD to run the program
3) Flash or QuickTime, PC or Mac? (Download QuickTime here.) The default format for videos on this CD is .avi which plays on all PCs and most Macs having current QuickTime 4 video players installed. PC users should view the videos from the default "Help Videos" menu on the CD, which uses the Shockwave Flash (.swf) Javi.exe video player directly. This yields optimal view results.* Macintosh video play from Flash is not supported, so a web browser interface (with "Videos Menu") is offered to access the videos. The .avi-format videos require the QuickTime 4.0 or higher media player plug-in (free at the Apple link below), installed in the browser. Also note that depending on the speed of your computer's CD reader, each 2-6 minute movie may take a few seconds or so to upload and start playing. *PC users may prefer to play videos from their web browser in the same way that Mac users must do; however, this may slightly lessen the video view quality. If you do not already have the QuickTime video player, you may obtain it along with the browser plug-in for Windows or Mac, free at: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ Back to General Questions Index 4) How do I install Adobe Acrobat Reader? Close or Minimize the Make Reading Fun!™ program by pressing Escape on your keyboard, and then clicking on the underline button (to minimize) or the X button (to close), at the top right corner of the window. For PC Users: For Mac Users: Back to General Questions Index 5) Where can I download Adobe Acrobat Reader? You may download Adobe Acrobat Reader by following this link: Back to General Questions Index 6) How do I know which objects on the screen are active? To see what objects or areas of the screen are selectable, move the mouse pointer over an object and watch for a highlight to appear around the object. Also notice that the mouse pointer will change from an arrow to a hand when positioned over a selectable word, phrase or icon. Back to General Questions Index 7) How do I access my computer's desktop or change screen view settings while running the Make Reading Fun!™ program? At any time during operation of the program, you may change the screen's view settings or access the desktop by pressing the ESC or Escape key on your keyboard. This will slightly reduce the screen image and enable the Flash menu bar at the top of the screen. You may minimize the Make Reading Fun!™ window at this point. Back to General Questions Index 8) What can I do to best promote phonic learning with this product? Encourage the child to listen very carefully for audible cues and instructions. Generally, these appear at the beginning of an activity and/or at the start of a new page. Back to General Questions Index 9) Sounds seem to repeat when the mouse moves over an active area, and they sometimes jumble together. Is this normal? What purpose does this serve? It is normal for the sounds to repeat and sometimes even "talk over" one another. The audible responses from the program are necessary for some children to learn. Hearing the words jumbling together or "talking over" one another will cause the child to question what he is hearing and consider what is causing it, demonstrating cause and effect. Repetition of sounds and practice using the mouse (by the child moving too quickly to other active objects) will help teach your child how to control the movement of the mouse. This is a desirable fine motor skill and valuable in assisting them with computer tasks in the future. Back to General Questions Index 10) What is the purpose of the duck-and-stairs graphic on the Fun Exercises pages? The duck and stairs are used as a way to exit one part of the exercise section and move on to another. In some cases this is also changing the level of difficulty of the exercise. To use this, simply move the mouse pointer over the duck and then click on the stairs. The duck should "move" up the stairs when your mouse pointer moves over them. When you click on the stairs, you will be taken to a new screen that will allow you to Exit the program entirely (via the Quit button), exit to the main menu screen (via the Menu button), or move on to another activity. Back to General Questions Index 11) How do I exit the make Reading Fun!™ program? Clicking the Quit button (on any screen that has one) will take you completely out of the program. Also, any screen that has a Menu button will take you back to the main menu screen, which also has a Quit button. From any screen that does not have a Quit or Menu button, you may hit the Esc or Escape key that will enable the Flash menu bar. From that menu bar, simply click the X button on the top right of the screen or choose File then close or Exit to leave the program completely. When in the Fun Exercises segment of the program, move your mouse over the duck-and-stairs graphic at the bottom right of the screen in order to leave the program. When you do this, the duck should appear to move up the stairs. As it does, click on the stairs and you will be taken to an exercises menu. This menu screen will allow you to leave the program entirely via the Quit button, go back to the main menu screen, via the Menu button (which also has a Quit button), or change to another exercise.
